Mens Blues

2018-2019 Season – East Leagues Premier A

  • Captain: Sean Gilmore
  • Vice-Captain: Ed Sides
  • Coach: Charlie Bannister

In 2017/18 the Light Blues were led by Matt Cockerill with Ed Sides as his vice-captain.  They enjoyed a solid season finishing 6th in East Prem A and 2nd in BUCS South Prem B but did not manage to win the Varsity trophy, losing out 3-1 in a well contested game.  Having narrowly missed out on promotion to the National Leagues in recent years, in 2018/19 the Blues will be looking to challenge for the title and regain the Varsity trophy.  Although a large proportion of the squad will remain in Cambridge for the upcoming season, captain Sean Gilmore will be hoping to bolster his team with new fresher talent…

With a strong presence of returning Blues, and an experienced coach in Charlie Bannister, our side will no doubt have the ability to challenge for every competition we enter with the side targeting promotion to the National League as well as regaining the varsity trophy. – Sean Gilmore

CUHC entered a men’s team into the BUCS competition for the first time in 2011/12, winning Midlands 4C as well as the Midlands Cup.  In 2012/13 the team registered 9 wins and a single draw in Midlands 3B and was promoted to the second division for the 2013/14 season, while also reaching the Midlands Cup final. Due to players’ academic commitments on Wednesday afternoons, the BUCS team tended to constitute a mix of players from all three teams, and as such proved a great force for club integration. In 2013/14, the Blues squad played the first eight matches of the season, securing promotion to Midlands 1 with two games to spare. Since then, the team has been challenging at the top of the table, although never quite securing promotion. This season the team aim to achieve a fourth promotion in eight years, this time to the highest level of BUCS hockey.
