The Cambridge University Hockey Club was founded in 1890. Recently, the traditionally separate Men’s and Women’s clubs merged to form a single club. We are now recognised as the biggest and most successful amalgamated University sports club in Cambridge.
We run three Men’s and three Women’s teams. Both 1st XIs hold a ‘full blue’ status and compete at the highest level of regional hockey, with the Women also playing in Premier League BUCS hockey. The ultimate goal for all six teams is to defeat their Oxford counterparts in the Varsity Match at the end of the season.
CUHC enjoyed a particularly successful Varsity campaigns in 2015, winning both Blues’ matches. In 2017, CUHC won 5 out of the 7 Varsity matches against Oxford. Last season saw mixed results (4 wins and 3 losses) and both Blues’ teams will be looking to avenge close defeats.
Information about coaching arrangements can be found here. Level 4 and England U16 coach, Charlie Bannister, will continue with the Men’s 1st XI and Darrel Cassidy will continue with the Women’s 1st XI. Sean Gilmore takes over from Matt Cockerill as Men’s Blues captain; while Hatty Darling hands over to Hattie Bevan as Women’s Blues captain.
If you are a fresher coming up to Cambridge in the Autumn, and are keen to continue hockey at university level, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch by filling in this form. Feel free to email either the or 1st XI captain with any further questions.
