The Cambridge University Hockey Club was founded in 1890. Recently, the traditionally separate Men’s and Women’s clubs merged to form a single club. We are now recognised as the biggest and most successful amalgamated University sports club in Cambridge.
We run three Men’s and three Women’s teams. Both 1st XIs hold a ‘full blue’ status and compete at the highest level of regional hockey, with the Women also playing in Premier League BUCS hockey. The ultimate goal for all six teams is to defeat their Oxf*rd counterparts in the Varsity Match at the end of the season.
CUHC enjoyed a particularly successful Varsity campaign in 2015, winning both Blues’ matches. The Men’s Blues’ trophy remained in light blue colours for the fourth consecutive year whilst the Women’s Blues regained the trophy they had last held in 2013. You can find match reports here. In 2017, CUHC won 5 out of the 7 varsity matches against Oxf*rd.
Coaching arrangements are still being finalised, but those for last year can be found here, with the Men’s 1st XI still looking to keep their Level 4 and England U16 coach Charlie Bannister. Taking over from Thomas Jackson as Men’s Blues captain will be Matt Cockerill; while Faye Kidd hands over to Hatty Darling as Women’s Blues captain.
If you are a fresher coming up to Cambridge in the Autumn, and are keen to continue hockey at university level, we would love to hear from you. Please get in touch by filling in the form on the men’s or women’s sections of the website. Feel free to email either the or 1st XI captain with any further questions.
